Putnam County commissioner resigns after plea agreement reached – Isaac Taylor
PUTNAM COUNTY, WV (WOWK) — Putnam County Commissioner Steve Deweese has resigned after a plea agreement was reached in the case against him, alleging that he misused funds while county sheriff, according to Attorney David Moye.
Attorney Moye, who is representing Deweese, said he submitted his letter of resignation to County Commission President Andy Skidmore on Tuesday, effective Nov. 30.
These allegations stem from his time as Putnam County sheriff, a position he held from 2012 to 2020. Moye said, in his opinion, the money from a fundraiser was “misappropriated.” He said Deweese cashed checks with no accountability.
Deweese reached a plea agreement with Special Prosecutor Matthew Deerfield where he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor fraudulent scheme, according to Moye. This could result in time behind bars, a fine or both.
Moye said the Deweese agreed to pay restitution of $4,000 and to never run for public office again.
The West Virginia Supreme Court will appoint a special judge to adjudicate the case.
According to Commission President Skidmore, they have 30 days from his resignation date to appoint a new commissioner. He said interviews will take place at their regular meeting on Dec. 17 where that appointment is expected to be made.
